I need more of my God and less of this world

After the resurrection, Jesus appears to his disciples on a few occasions.  How blessed they were to see him in the flesh and hear from him.  They don’t recognise him though in the way they did before, his appearance has changed, yet in their hearts they still know it is him.

John 21:12 – Jesus said, “Come and eat!” But none of the disciples dared ask who he was. They knew he was the Lord.

I suppose this got me to question whether I always recognise when God is talking to me.  Sometimes it’s clear and other times I question, was that me or was that God?  God can appear and talk to us in many different ways.  I believe that it’s important for me to recognise that so I remain open to hearing from him at any time, in any place and in any circumstance.

Surrounded by persuasive voices, voices that shout, voices that whisper, condemning, accusing, voices that whine and voices that whimper, strong words, weak words, meaningful and meaningless, as I listen my head’s a mess, I need more of my God and less of this world, more truth, less lies, more love, less despising, praise is rising in my soul, the Lord is close to all who call, discovering his ways nourishes my soul, they bring me joy, I stand strong and beautiful in his presence, no longer oppressed, the voices that drowned out my joy silenced forever as I hear directly from my heavenly Father, I’d rather spend one day in his presence than a thousand elsewhere, I know that he is near, I know he hears my cry, I wonder, do I hear every word he speaks to me, do I allow him to release me from the chains of humanity, do I believe consistently, do I seek him as desperately as my need to breathe, Spirit of the Living God fall afresh on me, fill me with a new found ability to hear you in my time of need, to hear you in my time of plenty, knowing your words are never empty, never condemning, never accusing but always words of love, words of wooing, words of a God who is forever pursuing.

Live as if your prayers are already answered

Prayer is such an important part of my life and it’s becoming for me much more of a two way thing.  I know I have blogged on prayer before but today I just felt so blessed that prayer is God’s way of spending time with us as well as us spending time with him.

When I pray you hear me, you incline your ear to me, when I pray I am not talking to the universe but to its creator, I live as if my prayers are already answered because I have faith and confidence in the one I pray to, I know that before I even get to my knees he is working on the answer, I know that if I spent more time praying and less time talking about my problems, my problems would diminish, my heart would be replenished and my soul nourished, for you are the God who works wonders, you are the God who is waiting for me whenever I remember to fall to my knees, you know my heart before the words part from my lips, you get it, you get me, you see what I need, you feel what I feel and you are real, I pray to you because you love me, you delight in me and I see what that really means, you want to be with me and I love that, I love that you want me to talk to you, you want us to be close and as I grow closer to you, you reveal great and wondrous things, you pour out blessings and best of all you’re happy to let me rest in you, silence sitting perfectly between us as I immerse myself in your love.

Time to climb to your watch tower and wait on his power

One thing I’m not that good at is being patient.  So that’s definitely an area I need to work on, I ask God a question and if I don’t feel like I get an immediate response I get frustrated.  Yet looking back at the last 18 months there have been so many responses from God, so many answers to prayer I have no doubt whatsoever that he will answer, I just have to learn to be patient and wait on God, more silence from me and more listening.

  • Micah 7:7 – But as for me, I watch in hope for the Lord, I wait for God my Saviour; my God will hear me.
  • Psalm 40:1 -“I waited patiently for the Lord; he turned to me and heard my cry.”
  • Romans 8:24-25 -“For in this hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what he sees? But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience.”
  • Isaiah 40:31 -“Yet those who wait for the LORD Will gain new strength; They will mount up with wings like eagles, They will run and not get tired, They will walk and not become weary.”
  • Galatians 6:9 -“And let us not lose heart in doing good, for in due time we shall reap if we do not grow weary.”
  • John 13:7 -Jesus replied, “You don’t understand what I’m doing now, but someday you will.”
  • Romans 12:12- “Let your hope make you glad. Be patient in time of trouble and never stop praying.”
  • Psalm 119:114 – You’re my place of quiet retreat; I wait for your Word to renew me.

Waiting, anticipating, what will God say today, talking, asking, speaking, praying, what is he saying?  Slow down, sit down, take your time, wait patiently for his word, he’s turned to you, he’s heard your cry, he will not deny you, he tells you be patient in times of trouble and never stop praying, so I’m just saying make that prayer multi layered, a time to talk and a time to listen, a time to climb to your watch tower and wait on his power, stay alert God has heard every word, let your hope make you glad for you have space in that place of quiet retreat where you wait for God to speak, for his word to renew, and it’s so true that we don’t understand all that God does now, but we will, on that glorious day when we cast our crowns before his throne we will know and now as we wait for his word we draw on his strength, rise up with wings like eagles, soaring over our issues and worries with an unhurried attitude, God’s got this, he’s in control, with God in the picture our lives are made whole, so don’t lose heart in doing good for the time is coming when you will reap all that you sow, where God’s blessings will overflow.

The crucifixion was not fiction

Do we know what God wants us to do?  Do we ask him each day for guidance?  I have to admit that some days I forget to ask for his guidance and just go headfirst into my day with no plan.  Yet he clearly tells us that his word is the lamp for our feet, he guides us and when we follow his commands we will find delight and joy.

As I started to write this I was sent a link to a daily devotional which talks about having a true belief that God is guiding your steps, and if you really believe he is doing that then why would you question or doubt his way for you?

So I resolve to spend more time in prayer to find out what God’s plans are and then be obedient to his call.

  • Psalm 119:35 – Direct me in the path of your commands, for there I find delight.
  • Psalm 119:105 – Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.

Belief, confidence and trust no matter the cost, conviction that the crucifixion was not fiction, your death the breath of life required for human salvation, as nation rises up against nation, neighbourhood tensions rise, man despises man, you have a plan, your plans to prosper and to save, your plans erupted from the grave as you tore through death, the enemy shattered on his knees as you seized victory, death where is your sting and now I sing of all that God has done for me, I seize the opportunities that he has planned for me, direct my path Lord as you sit at God’s right hand, show me the way, hear me as I pray, make your word come alive and in your words may I find delight.

Holy Spirit gives you the courage and substance to share your testimony

One strong message I got from church today was that my anointing, my job as such is to live my life in a way that preaches the good news, a way that draws people to God, perhaps in a way that makes them question their beliefs and question mine in a way that makes them curious to learn more.  I know I can do more and I know it’s not necessarily about preaching with my voice, it’s also preaching through my actions and behaviours.

The other message I have got strongly from God is the need to really listen and let his word sink in and change us, this links with my anointing, I have to listen and allow him to change me – a quote I saw prior to church this morning was:

“Help us take our fingers out of our ears and let the truth penetrate our heart, soul and mind”

He gives us one job, one task, all he asks is for us to preach the gospel at all times, so go out, tell someone what great things Jesus has done for you and do not be ashamed of the Gospel, for it is the power of God, it is salvation for everyone who believes, take the blindfold from your eyes, your fingers out of your ears, let the truth penetrate your heart, your soul, your mind and you know it’s not just about speaking the truth, the way you live your life can be proof of a life changed, when people listen to you or see how you behave, when they read your Facebook page or see your Twitter feed, would they bring their needs to you, would they see your light shining from the screen or would it all seem a bit superficial, an artificial religion that means nothing to them and not much to you?  Walk the walk don’t just talk the talk, let Jesus shine through you, his Spirit leading you, open up your heart, ask God for an understanding of the implications of your behaviour, not just for your salvation but for those he has put in your path, those who depend on you to shine the light on their life, praise God for the everyday encounters that he gifts to you so freely, encounters that you really need to grasp and own, encounters that you can turn to times of witness, draw on all the Holy Spirit gives to you, the chance to share of God’s greatness waits around every corner and his Spirit gives you the courage and substance to share your testimony, to tell others the story of what Jesus has done for you, for we were not saved to stay silent and through the grace of our Heavenly Father we have been saved, ask God to show you the way, ask him to open up chances for you to witness, to give you the words and quickness of thought to answer their questions, to let your life be an expression of a life lived with Jesus at the centre, enter into a partnership with the Holy Spirit and your witness for God will know no limits.

When to be a Mary not a Martha

Was reading Luke 10 today, two sisters who acted very differently around God, one anxious to serve and have everything perfect for his visit, the other happy to sit at his feet and listen.  I suppose we all have a bit of both these sisters within us and we need to know when to stop “busying” ourselves and start “listening”.  This has been a recurring theme for me, the need to stop and listen to God and whilst I am getting better at this I need to ensure I give myself enough time to absorb his love and listen to his word for me.

Listen, silently reflect.  Clear your mind of all the clutter, the thoughts of the day, prepare yourself to pray, ready yourself to hear his voice, may you rejoice in the opportunity to be still with God, thankful that he wants you to come near to him so that he can draw close to you, breathe in the atmosphere and know that God is near, listen and hear, God is here.
