Life with God, a conscious journey of shared purpose

I was thinking about covenant this morning and the covenants God has made with us.  A covenant is an agreement and that implies an agreement between two parties.  This is not a one-sided promise from God, it demands action and obedience from us.

The death of Jesus on the Cross ushered in a new covenant under which we are justified by God’s grace and mercy. We can have forgiveness of our sins and a close, unbroken relationship with God.

  • Jeremiah 31:31-34 – The day will come, says the Lord, when I will make a new contract with the people of Israel and Judah.  It won’t be like the one I made with their fathers when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt—a contract they broke, forcing me to reject them, says the Lord.  But this is the new contract I will make with them: I will inscribe my laws upon their hearts, so that they shall want to honour me; then they shall truly be my people and I will be their God.  At that time it will no longer be necessary to admonish one another to know the Lord. For everyone, both great and small, shall really know me then, says the Lord, and I will forgive and forget their sins.
  • Matthew 26:28 – for this is my blood, sealing the new covenant. It is poured out to forgive the sins of multitudes
  • Hebrews 9:15 – Christ came with this new agreement so that all who are invited may come and have forever all the wonders God has promised them. For Christ died to rescue them from the penalty of the sins they had committed while still under that old system

What crossed my mind was how many people expect God’s side of this promise without actually doing anything to receive it.  There are people who go to church every week who may not know Jesus yet, they may not see the need to ask for that forgiveness, to repent and turn from their past.  Then there are those who say, well I’m a good person so I’ll go to heaven I don’t need to do any more.  If we are to receive God’s promise of eternal life we simply have to respond, ask his forgiveness and repent of our sins.  From that moment on he moves in, his promise secured and his love starts to work within us to make us new in him.  Our attitudes, thoughts and behaviours all starting to change as we grow in his love.  It’s a simple covenant for us to make, Lord help us to show others the joy of life lived in covenant with you.

Covenant Love, the love of our Father above, a rational love, our final destination is joy, choosing to help others along the way, receiving unconditional love from God on a daily basis, forever secure, keeping our covenant with God he pours out his divine powers upon us, faithful God, he keeps his promises, giving in, giving up are not options, our life with God a conscious journey of shared purpose, he will finish the work which he has started, belonging to Jesus you will never fall, he holds all your days in his hands, his demands are small, just ask his forgiveness and give him your all, a privilege and delight to be in his sights, a life out of darkness, walking in light.
