Where there is pride there is strife

Reading yet again in the news today about more celebrations of Gay Pride just got me thinking about God’s word on pride.  There are so many verses (there are just 4 below).  We are not called to be proud, but humble, we are not called to boast but to be unassuming, we are called to give God all the glory.

Whatever our background, whatever our lifestyle it is a good exercise to search our hearts to see where we are harbouring pride and to give this to God in repentance.

  • Psalm 115:1 – Not to us, Lord, not to us but to your name be the glory, because of your love and faithfulness
  • Proverbs 13:10 – Where there is strife, there is pride, but wisdom is found in those who take advice
  • James 4:10 – Humble yourselves before the Lord and he will lift you up
  • 1 Corinthians 13:4 – Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.

Pride is about our own glory, Humility is about GOD’s glory, pride is looking at your story and making it more important than the things God is doing in your life, and the question is, can anything of heaven live in you if pride resides in your life?  Have you made your lifestyle an idol, are you celebrating human qualities that you want to define you, maybe the truth is hard to swallow when you’re choking on your pride, maybe when Satan whispered in your ear, he lied, you see taking pride in your own lifestyle kind of marginalises the sacrifice that Jesus made to set you free, speaking candidly he died so that we could live for him, free of pride and free of sin, the aim for us as followers of Jesus should surely be, not to us Lord but to you be the glory, I encourage you to consider your story, take advice from the Master, seek wisdom and allow yourself to be absorbed with God’s Kingdom, recognising wise words when they’re spoken, where there is pride there is strife, where there is wisdom there is new life.
