Was challenged today when reading about Lot and his wife escaping Sodom when reading that Lot’s wife looked back. Disobeying God she looked back and became a pillar of salt… now I know that as humans looking back is part of our make-up, it’s what we do, sometimes as an excuse for our current behaviour/situation and sometimes maybe because we don’t grasp how exciting our future can be with God if we would just let go of the past. Now I’m not saying God’s going to turn us into pillars of salt but it does make me think that if we keep turning away from God, looking back or disobeying him then we are not getting everything we can from him or indeed the best we can have. So when tempted to use your past as an excuse or to disobey God because we think what we have now is good enough, think on, God wants the best for us, trust and obey.
Genesis 19:26 – But Lot’s wife looked back. When she did, she became a pillar made out of salt.
Colossians 3:2 – Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.
Isaiah 43: 18-19 – Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.
When the Devil makes you look at the past, there’s clearly something good in your future he doesn’t want you to see, forget the former things, don’t live in the past, God is doing new stuff, enough of the martyr, the sufferer, get right back up and see what God is doing, see the mountains he is moving, improve your outlook by reading God’s book, set your mind on things holy, forget the earthly issues and worries, you don’t need any of these, set your eyes on the prize and run the race, live in the radiance of God’s grace, trust God, obey, pray without ceasing keeping your focus on God’s amazing promises of joy, confidence, of courage and God’s providence for he’s about to do something new and if you keep looking forward it’s going to include you.
